The Process: A Sneak Peek of The Cape Miniseries

June 2, 2011

When I buy a DVD the first things I watch are the behind the scenes, or making of featurettes. That’s always been me. I want to see the process, hear the screenwriter and director talk about why they did things a certain way, or why they cut various scenes. It’s the same in comics. When I buy a deluxe hardcover, or graphic novel that has bonus content showing the evolution of a page from script to print, I’m turning to that section first. The creative process is one of my biggest inspirations, and nothing gets me more pumped to write a scene than the thought of what Zach Howard and Nelson Daniel are going to do with it.

So here’s a sneak peek of issue #1 of THE CAPE miniseries, which ships in July. I’ve included my script (sorry about the format error on panel 3, line 6 –I couldn’t get it to align) Zach’s pencils and inks, and Nelson’s colors so you can get a look at our process. I hope it inspires you as much as it does me. Enjoy.

PAGE 13

Panel 1

Eric spins around, startled by his mother creeping behind him. She recoils from his excessive reaction.

1. Eric                           SHIT, MA!

2. Eric                           YOU SCARED THE PISS OUT OF ME!

Panel 2

Eric turns back around to get one last look at the car as it drives away. His mother stands behind him and rests her hands on his shoulders.

3. Mom                        I’M SORRY, HUN. DID DETECTIVE PACKARD HAVE ANY NEWS ABOUT ANGIE?

4. Eric                          NO, JUST THE SAME BULLSHIT QUESTIONS THE LAST GUY HAD.

Panel 3

Eric turns from the window, brushing off his mother’s hands from his shoulders. She’s clearly concerned for him, and keeps her eyes low so she doesn’t anger him further.

5. Eric                          LOOK. I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS AGAIN.

6. Eric                         AND STOP WALKING AROUND HERE WITH THAT LOOK OF PITY ON YOUR FACE ALL THE TIME.  I’M FINE, TRUST ME.

7.  Mom                      I’M SORRY.

Panel 4

Eric gets in his mother’s face, she continues to stare at the ground.

8. Eric                         YEAH, YOU SAID THAT ALREADY.

Panel 5

Close on mom, same pose. Eric has left the panel.
